Good Country People

In "Good Country People," In rural Georgia, Mrs. Hopewell runs her family farm with the help of tenants Mr. and Mrs. Freeman. Mrs. Hopewell's daughter, Joy, who got her leg shot off in an accident when she was a child, now lives at home with her mother. Thirty three year old Joy has earned a PhD in philosophy, but she does not seem to have much common sense. In an act of rebellion, she has changed her name to Hulga, and she lives in a state of annoyed anger at her mother and Mrs. Freeman. A Bible salesman comes to the door, claiming his name is Manly Pointer, and manages to get invited to dinner. He and Hulga make a date to have a picnic together the next day. That night Hulga imagines with her superior mind and education that she's in control and that she will seduce him. Instead Manly tricks Hulga to take off her glasses and leg and he packs them away into his suitcase and leaves her laying in the barn loft all alone.

  1. This is a sick, twisted, and unwanted piece of literature.... but I found if funny as hell. Some people just because they are book smart that they know everything but like Siran said, they dont have common sense. Common sense is what has gotten men through battles and through adversity. The way Hulga changed her named seemed like she did such for a new identity. She was well educated and was not using her education and seemed to not be happy with her own life. One thing I would like to say from my point of view is that people should do what makes them happy, not what makes others. Hulga chose her path and just because she changed her name does not set her up for success. She was lonely and wanted to get laid, Manly took advantage of her, though not in the way she had hoped. In conclusion, life screws us all, adapt and overcome.

  2. Sick or just twisted? I have heard of survival of the fittest. However, there is a fine line that seperates that from just feeding off the week. Feeding off the week is just one of the most low down things that anyone can do. Some of the week are not week by choice. They are only that way due to extenuating circumstances. They way the guy took that young lady's wooden leg was just disgusting in regards to character. However, there is a lesson to be learned from this. You can not just trust anyone!!!
