In the poem "The Road Not Taken" Robert Frost expresses many interesting thoughts. In the poem the speaker has been walking around for a while and comes to a fork in the road. The person must decide which road to take. There is only time to take one. So in order to figure out which road to take the speaker starts comparing the roads and gives us descriptions. And after the person has made a decision they express their feelings on their choice. This poem includes two themes. The first one is individualism which is expressed well in the poem since the speaker has to make a decision on their own. It can be compared to an officer in the military. The higher ranking officer is always faced with a decision that has consequences. The officer is the leader and he must make the choices for his followers. Moreover, the poem also talks about another theme called romanticism. The speaker is considered to be a friend of Robert Frost: Edward Thomas. It is said that the poem has an ironic nature and origin because Frost uses Thomas in the poem as the person who must make the decision. The decisions we make will make all the difference in our future.

  1. (Aauzsa Mack) I like how Mr. Bryson went into depth and how he used the army as an example of decisions that have to be made in life, because that is true, officers of the army must make decisions that might be the difference between life and death. This poem signified how the decisions you make really could make out how your life may become. The way Frost described the poems really had you thinking about what would have happened if he was really able to travel both roads. The poem makes you think on how you might make decisions in your life; do you make decisions that you have seen others before you take or do you look for a different route and see where that road might take you.

  2. I too like the military aspect you took in this post. And you are right, in life we all have choices to make and we have to live with them. A quote that comes to mind is " Are you willing to make the harder right or the easier wrong?" Throughout life we will all come to a fork in the road and the trick is no matter which we take, we must like with the choice that we made and if the road we choose is the wrong one we cant dwell on it but rather move on and learn from our mistakes. As was mentioned with Generals and the decisions they make, yes they are truly complex and deal life, these officers have soldiers lives in their hands and they have to calculate the risk and hope that they make the correct decision. The thing is, officers with this rank have been at many crossroads and have had experience to guide them... Learned from their mistakes.
