A Man Said to the Universe by Stephen Crane is a short, but very true poem. In the poem a man says to the universe: “Sir I exist!” However the universe had no obligation to the man simply because he existed. The poem is so true in the world today. As adults people are taught to go and get the things they want and that nothing is going to be given to them, as if they were still children. The universe was here before anything existed and will remain after nothing exists. In this poem Crane’s choice of words is great and shows how cold the world can be sometimes. Crane does not use any imagery or other literary tools; he simply tells it how it is. As a person, you don’t matter to the universe. We are not here for the universe, the universe is here for us and after we die the universe will continue. There is nothing that says life is easy and I think Crane realized that life was not easy. He understood that eventually a person has to grow up and face the harsh realities of life.

  1. Mr. Mitchell. I have to agree completely ith what you have to say about "A Man Said to the Universe." It does seem like today that we can get swallowed up into this world and feel like no one cares about what happens to us. And also like you said, nothing in this life today is easy nor will it come to us easy either. We as a generation and as a world have to go out and work for what we want. I believe that those in the early 20th century felt that way because they had to work for everything they had. But nowadays people do not want to work or work hard to get to the places they want to go.

In this world, nothing will be handle to us or will life be easy either. To accomplish our goals we as a people have to go out and work hard for whatever we want. Nowadays most people are lazy and want stuff quick and fast like a mircowave.

  3. I love this poem Mitchell because it's a slap in the face to the man who thinks he is larger than the universe that he expects for it to recognize his existence.

"shows how cold the world can be sometimes"

This quote you gave Mr. Mitchell is important to what Stephen Crane really battled with in most of his writings: the battle between nature and man and whether everything is predetermined.

This boastfulness the man in the poem shows his arrogance, his want to have recognition, and to be placed with the universe with importance. This is a false thought in a true democratic republic like in America that everyone has a right to everything. FALSE! We must work to be as important as the universe and to be a "self-made man."
