"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" also known as just "Prufrock" is an American poem by T.S. Eliot. This poem was very nice to read but it is very hard to interpret what it is saying. It seems like the poem is speaking of a middle-aged man who is sexually frustrated and this man wants to say something to a girl but he is afraid to do so. The poem gives us many examples on how and why he is afraid to say something. He judges himself and thinks he is not good looking for example he says " Do I dare?" and "With a bald spot in the middle of my hair-....". This man is not very confident and does not believe in his actions. In the poem he questions himself about what he should do or whether he should do something for example "Do I dare disturb the universe?" or "So how should I presume?" Moreover, the poem creates a very comfortable mood right at the beginning. The poem says: "Let us go then, you and I, / When the evening is spread out against the sky.....". I find it very easily to read poems that have rhyme because it makes it more interesting to read and it gives the poem more meaning.

ReplyDeleteThis is a unique and unusual interpretation of the poem but Bryson does make a good point though. The poem has a comfortable setting but the man has low self- esteem. In the poem he is constantly criticizing and questioning his actions or his thoughts. Bryson shows some of the examples where the narrator criticizes himself like when his talking of his balding spot. The woman seems to have made the narrator afraid to approach her like she is an unfound beauty. The narrator seems to be shamed by his appearance as Bryson points out and is in a debate with himself to see should he really attempt to approach or should he stay back in the shadows.
this is as Mack puts it,"A unique and unusual interpretation" I agree with Bryson with what he states as far as how the man judges himself and thinks that he is not a good looking person and that happens everyone at some point. He is afraid of what others think and their opinions have led to the unwinding of his persona. This man is one of those guys who keeps to himself though he brings out a quote that anyone can use and has since reading became one of my favorite, "Do I dare disturb the universe?" This leads me to believe that he is on the brink of coming out of his shell and sayin "accept me for who I am or F**k off." That is the kind of attitude I believe people should have either way.
