"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock"

For my fourth blog, I am choosing to comment on "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by TS Eliot. This poem itself seems to be like an examination of the tortured psyche of the original man. He seems to be addressing his lover in the poem but he does not ever find the one he loves. He is thinking daily of those around him and is wondering what they are saying of him. This shows how insecure he is, by not knowing what might happen and where. This description of Prufrock explains many people in our world today. Because so many people are insecure with themselves and cannot live one day without wondering what others are thinking or doing around them. Also just like in this poem, when Prufrock does not find what he is looking for in his life or in women he chooses to go out in the world and find them in cheap hotels or restraurants. This shows the decline in morality in the poem itself and also people going out to find thrills in the cheapness that only lasts for a night. Unfortunately, I do believe this is what our world has come to. We choose to go out and find pleasure in the small things even though they do not last but a moment. Everyone chooses what they want to try and fill their lives with, and I believe that everything is a personal choice. It is just a matter of what we choose to do in our free time or who we choose to be around who influence us in the good or bad.

  1. The one word that stuck out the most in this entire opinion was "insecure." Looking back at the poem, it seems the man is really unsure on who he is. That in turn prohibits his want to talk to a girl he likes.

This point is crucial to see who this man is or who he sees himself in a very dark light. Mr. LeClair, you compare these feelings and obscurity is a part of our current physique and culture. I partly agree because of some things that our culture is obstructed from but I will give the satisfaction that it is a majority of feelings that our culture today faces. I agree with the foreshadowing that TS Eliot may have poked at us that this modernization drives us into insecurity and the never-ending quest to find truth.

  2. I agree with My. Fhlug the word "insecure" does describe the personality of the man. The man is too afraid to find his lover. He is always thinking about how he looks and how he acts. The man seems to have very little confidence in himself. He is always worried about how the women look at him. In life if you worry about what other people think of you you will not get far. You must accept yourself as you are and do not care what other people think of you. There is always the possibility to change but it is very hard.

  3. I agree with all points made, this is correct, the worlds moral compass is upside down. In the old days we would be frowned upon by our elders as to how we conduct daily life. For instance look at the music we listen to, if my Grandmother heard some of it she would whoop my ass even at 20 years old. the fact of the matter is, we are going to do what makes us happy regardless of what others think. In the poem this individual was extremely insecure about himself. He fantasied about a certain woman but because of his insecurities he did not pursue it , rather a cheap shot of ass from a hooker because he believed they were the only ones that would love him and not cast judgement, mostly because he was paying them.
